This painting marks the beginning of a new series exploring the relationship between geology, ancestry and identity. Before becoming a full-time artist, I worked as a geologist for more than ten years. One of the things geology teaches you is the immense scale of time, with layers of rock recording events that took place millions of years ago.
In this painting, the layers above the figure represent both geological strata and the generations that came before us. Just as landscapes are built up layer by layer, our identities are shaped by inherited traits, experiences and influences passed down through time.
With her eyes closed, the figure appears calm and reflective, inviting us to consider the long chain of people and events that have contributed to who we are today.
