In Ancestral Strata, the portrait is topped with layers inspired by geological cross-sections. The bands of orange, blue, ochre and grey represent layers of rock built up over millions of years and shaped by faulting and movement within the Earth.
The painting explores the idea that our identities are built in a similar way. We are shaped by generations of inherited traits, experiences and memories, with each layer contributing to who we become.
